چکیده

An experimental study was conducted to determine the proximity aeroheating characteristics for a two-stage-to-orbit concept in close proximity in the NASA Langley 20-Inch Mach 6 Air Tunnel. A new hybrid discrete thin-film resistance gauge technique was evaluated in this study and used to measure experimental interference heating levels between the booster and the orbiter at a constant freestream Reynolds number of 8.25x10 6 /m and a variety of separation and axial offset distances. It was found that, as the orbiter separates from the booster and the booster falls away, the windward centerline heating increased on the orbiter by as much as 13-times over the baseline, single model heating distribution, and on the booster by as much as 6-times. The aeroheating database developed can be used for computational fluid dynamic code validation.

AIAA 2002-4506 Control Surface and Afterbody Experimental Aeroheating for a Proposed Mars Smart Lander Aeroshell

Several configurations, having a Viking aeroshell heritage and providing lift-to-drag required for precision landing, have been considered for a proposed Mars Smart Lander. An experimental aeroheating investigation of two configurations, one having a blended tab and the other a blended shelf control surface, has been conducted at the NASA Langley Research Center in the 20-Inch Mach 6 Air Tunnel...

Study of Parameters Affecting Separation Bubble Size in High Speed Flows using k-ω Turbulence Model

Shock waves generated at different parts of vehicle interact with the boundary layer over the surface at high Mach flows. The adverse pressure gradient across strong shock wave causes the flow to separate and peak loads are generated at separation and reattachment points. The size of separation bubble in the shock boundary layer interaction flows depends on various parameters. Reynolds-averaged...

A preconditioned solver for sharp resolution of multiphase flows at all Mach numbers

A preconditioned five-equation two-phase model coupled with an interface sharpening technique is introduced for simulation of a wide range of multiphase flows with both high and low Mach regimes. Harten-Lax-van Leer-Contact (HLLC) Riemann solver is implemented for solving the discretized equations while tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) interface sharpening method is applied ...

Aeroheating Analysis for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter with Comparison to Flight Data

The aeroheating environment of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has been analyzed using the direct simulation Monte Carlo and free-molecular techniques. The results of these analyses were used to develop an aeroheating database to be used for the preflight planning and the in-flight operations support for the aerobraking phase of the MRO mission. The aeroheating predictions calculated for ...
